Episode 42: Arsenal Win the Cup and Our Best and Worst of the Season

May 30, 2017

Arsenal became the most successful FA Cup club, while Arsene Wenger became the most successful FA cup manager of all time with a thrilling Wembley win against Chelsea. We review that, then discuss our hopes for the summer, our best XI of the season, best goal, best and worst games, moments and plenty more.

Rob sums up each Premier league side's seasons in 20 haiku and Ben, finally, comes up with an end of season quiz!

This is our last MTM proper of the season so thank you all so much for listening. We hope you've enjoyed it. Keep an eye out for some summer specials that might be cropping up to keep you going through the off season. Until then, all the best.

Episode 41: End of Season Round-Up

May 23, 2017

Only the Champions League places were left to decide on the final weekend of the Premier League season and Liverpool did enough to keep Arsenal out of the competition for the first time in 20 years.  We round-up the season as a whole, team by team, laughing at our pre-season predictions along the way.

A sad Arsene Wenger provides the poem this week, via Rob Casey; there's good news for our favourite lower league teams, Millwall and Exeter City, and there's arm-breaking and back-tattoo news.

We'll be back next week to review the FA Cup final, more play-off action and we'll be doing our best XIs and goals of the season, our favourite moments, worst moments, a quiz and that sort of thing.

Episode 40: Chelsea Win the Title

May 17, 2017

Chelsea clinched the Premier League title this weekend and Hull were relegated leaving only the Champions League spots to decide. Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal won all their games to keep the battle for fourth place going till the final round of games.

We cover all the PL matches as usual, see how Exeter got on in the play-offs and have a look at some of the European league tables.

The ever-reliable Rob provides a poem and we have Tony Adams news and discuss the most hated teams of all time.

P.S. I must also apologise for the sub-standard audio quality this week. It is entirely down to the human error of the technician, (me). It is listenable but reminiscent of the dawn of the age of radio. Sorry! We'll be back to studio quality next week, I promise.

Episode 39: Spurs’ Title Chance Hammered and Wenger Finally Defeats Mourinho

May 9, 2017

From St Gunneringham day joy to having their title hopes hammered at the London Stadium, it has been a rollercoaster week for Spurs fans.

Wenger finally beat Mourinho in a game that matters (sort of) and big Fraser Forster bullied little Jimmy Milner into missing a penalty in a drab draw against Southampton. Chelsea relegate Middlesborough on their way to the title, and some other games happened.

We have a squeaky-bum time poem and we congratulate Millwall on reaching the League 1 play-off final.

Episode 38: Arsenal and Chelsea Make it to the FA Cup Final

April 25, 2017

The two entertaining FA Cup semis get top billing on the show this week. Paul is happy as Arsenal made it through and Spurs didn't.

The Premier League matches get the MTM analysis. Dan is furious as Liverpool succumbed to Big Sam's tactical genius.

And, the lower leagues get their usual few minutes. Ben and Rob are twitchy as the play-offs approach.

We also have a Pointless quiz, news, and much, much more...

Episode 37: Chelsea’s Lead Over Spurs Cut to 4 Points

April 19, 2017

This week, as fans of Arsenal and Liverpool, we reluctantly salute Tottenham's demolition of Bournemouth and Mourinho's tactical masterclass against Chelsea which has made the title race even more exciting.

We discuss Arsene Wenger's switch to a back three and Liverpool's win over West Brom and the rest of the weekend's games.

Anyone who has tried to avoid the scores while waiting for Match of the Day will appreciate Rob's poem, Paul tries to guess Robert Pires' best XI and Dan reveals what walk-on music he'd choose if he were a boxer.

Episode 36: Spurs Keep Pressure on Chelsea

April 11, 2017

Welcome to another edition of Mid Table Matters. All the weekend games from the Premier League are reviewed, but because we recorded on Monday night, the Crystal Palace vs Arsenal game was only mentioned insofar as Paul (who was avoiding the score) expressed optimism for an Arsenal win, much to the amusement of Ben and Dan (who were keeping track of the score).

Sean Dyche met our roving poet, Rob Casey this week and kindly agreed to read a poem on the podcast. The Blockbusters quiz is back and there's the usual lower league features.

Episode 35: Title Race Back On

April 4, 2017

Two fine goals and a wonderful defensive performance from Crystal Palace meant Chelsea dropped points and, as Spurs managed to capitalise away at Burnley, the title race is now BACK ON!!!!!!

A Coutinho inspired Liverpool won the Merseyside derby and Arsenal and Man city played out an unsatisfactory, if entertaining, draw at the Emirates.

We look at all the other weekend matches and there's poems, and lower league features galore. Also, Ben is quizmaster this week, and if you'd like to play along at home, a pencil and paper might come in handy...

Episode 34: More Woe For Wenger at West Brom

March 22, 2017

Arsene Wenger reached the lowest point in his twenty years at Arsenal with another loss away at West Brom amid fan protests. In contrast, Pep Guardiola had the best day of his life apparently, drawing at home to Liverpool!

Chelsea marched on relentlessly to the title, Man Utd finally moved out of 6th position in the league and Leicester's renaissance continued under Shakespeare.

These and all the rest of the Premier League games are discussed and The Bard of Exeter FC sings for you. Don't miss it!

Episode 33: The Big Boys Reach The Semis

March 15, 2017

The team are back together again to discuss the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and the handful of Premier League games played at the weekend.

Mourinho had another unhappy return to Stamford Bridge, Arsenal got their swagger back against Lincoln, Spurs outclassed Millwall and Liverpool somehow managed a win against a superior Burnley side.

The bard, formerly known as the Bard of Exeter, gives us something a bit different and we have a fiendishly difficult Only Connect themed quiz. We end the show with some recommendations of other podcasts we enjoy, so give them a listen too. (Links below..)

Till next week...
